Legal AI alternatives: how to compare tools
The right legal AI tool depends on your firm size, budget, the law you work with and how you check output. Compare tools on published price, self-serve access, sources, citations you can open, Word workflow, hosting and the route to a human lawyer. Below are those criteria and dated comparisons.

Seven questions to ask any legal AI tool
Most legal AI products look alike in a demo. These questions separate them, and each has an answer you can check on the vendor's own pages. Our guide to vendor questions goes further.
- What does it cost, and can you see that before you commit?A published price list, or a quote after a sales call. Per seat, per task or by consumption.
- Can you start without a sales call?A free start or trial lets you test on your own work before a procurement process.
- Which law does it actually hold?Named statutes, case law, commentary and the jurisdictions covered, and what is missing.
- Can you open the source behind each claim?A citation is only useful if it opens the provision itself, with its status and date. See how to check AI legal citations.
- Can you see what the AI did?Which searches it ran, what it read and what it skipped.
- Who approves changes to documents?Tracked changes in Word that you accept or reject, or edits applied for you.
- Where is data hosted, and who processes it?Hosting region, AI model providers, training policy and any certifications the vendor names.

Detailed comparisons
- Harvey AI vs Consilena: enterprise platform for large firms and in-house teams, compared with a pay-as-you-go workspace.

- Luminance vs Consilena: enterprise contract intelligence, compared with contract review against cited legislation.
Why do enterprise legal AI tools cost what they do?
Harvey, Legora and Luminance do not publish prices; each routes buyers to a demo or sales conversation. Their published material describes large deployments: Harvey says it is used by 80+ AmLaw 100 firms, Luminance says 1,000+ enterprises. Enterprise contracts typically bundle licensed legal content, security certifications, single sign-on, onboarding and support. Those are real costs, and some buyers need them.
If you are a solicitor, a small firm or an in-house team that wants to test legal AI on real work first, a self-serve tool with a published price is a different trade-off: less bundled content and fewer certifications, more control over spend.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Harvey AI alternative?
It depends on what you need. If you want to start without a sales call, see a price before you commit, and open the provision behind each claim, Consilena offers free start credits and pay-as-you-go packs. If you need enterprise certifications and licensed case-law content, compare the enterprise vendors.
Who is Harvey AI's biggest competitor?
There is no single answer. Legora is often compared with Harvey because both sell agent-based platforms to law firms and in-house teams. Other vendors, such as Thomson Reuters CoCounsel, Lexis+ AI and Luminance, also sell AI tools for legal work, with different focuses.
Why is Harvey AI so expensive?
Harvey does not publish prices, so its cost cannot be stated. Its plans are sold through sales conversations to firms and legal departments, typically including security certifications, licensed content sources, onboarding and support.
Is there a legal AI tool with published prices?
Yes. Consilena lists its credit packs on its pricing page, gives free start credits without a card, and shows an estimate before each question.
Does Consilena include case law?
No. Consilena covers selected UK Acts and regulations, German federal statutes and EU law, plus French, Swiss and US federal law. There is no UK or German case law yet.
