Consilena MCP server: legal research inside your AI assistant
Consilena runs a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://consilena.com/mcp. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code, sign in with your Consilena account through OAuth, and your assistant can ask cited legal questions, read your matters and documents, and start reviews. Usage is billed in your credits, as in the web app.
Server URL https://consilena.com/mcp beta
Endpoint and sign-in
| Server URL | https: |
|---|---|
| Transport | Streamable HTTP (remote MCP) |
| Authentication | OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration and PKCE |
| Account | Your Consilena account; you approve the scopes on a Consilena consent screen |
| Billing | Your Consilena credits |
Clients register themselves (dynamic client registration), so there is no API key to copy. When you connect, your client opens Consilena in the browser; you sign in, review the scopes it asks for, and approve. You can disconnect a client at any time.
Add Consilena to Claude
- Open connectorsIn Claude, go to Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Paste the URLName it “Consilena” and paste
https:as the server URL, then add it./ / consilena. com/ mcp - ConnectChoose Connect, sign in to Consilena in the window that opens and approve the scopes.
In Claude Code, add it from the terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http consilena https://consilena.com/mcpAdd Consilena to ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to custom MCP servers in developer mode. Turn on developer mode in ChatGPT’s connector settings (under the advanced settings), create a connector, paste the server URL, choose OAuth as the authentication, and sign in to Consilena when asked. Availability of developer mode depends on your ChatGPT plan.
Add Consilena to Cursor or VS Code
Cursor reads MCP servers from . in a project, or ~/ for every project:
{
"mcpServers": {
"consilena": {
"url": "https://consilena.com/mcp"
}
}
}VS Code reads them from .:
{
"servers": {
"consilena": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://consilena.com/mcp"
}
}
}The editor starts the OAuth sign-in the first time a tool is used.
Scopes
A client gets only the scopes you approve. Grant the fewest your workflow needs: an assistant that only researches needs ask and threads:.
| Scope | Allows |
|---|---|
ask | Ask legal questions and start research runs. |
threads: | Read your question threads and their answers. |
matters: | List and read your matters. |
matters: | Create and update matters. |
documents: | Read documents and their extracted text. |
documents: | Upload documents. |
reviews | Start document reviews and read their results. |
compare | Compare the law of several jurisdictions. |
Tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
ask_ | Ask a question; Consilena researches it with citations, as in the web app. |
get_ | Fetch the answer, citations and status of a question asked earlier. |
list_ | List your recent question threads. |
list_ | List your matters. |
create_ | Create a matter to keep facts, documents and outputs together. |
upload_ | Upload a document to a matter. |
get_ | Read the extracted text of a document. |
start_ | Start a review of one or more documents. |
compare_ | Compare how jurisdictions treat the same question. |
search_ | Search the law library and return matching provisions with their sources. |
Answers come back with the same numbered citations as in the web app, each linking to the provision at its official publisher. Open them before you rely on anything; see how to check AI-cited law.
Billing and limits
Usage through MCP is billed in your Consilena credits exactly like the web app: the same prices, the same balance, the same work trace.
See pricing. The work your assistant starts appears in your Consilena workspace, so you can open the trace, the sources and any document it produced.
Your assistant decides when to call a tool, and text from documents can try to steer it (prompt injection). Approve tool calls that write, such as uploads and new matters, and keep scopes narrow. AI output is not legal advice.
