Legal AI glossary

Legal AI borrows words from computing and from law, and uses some of them loosely. This glossary defines 25 terms in plain English, from agentic AI and retrieval-augmented generation to in-force law, tracked changes and data residency, and says where each one shows up in Consilena.

How to use the glossary

Each entry gives a one-line definition, a short explanation and, where it applies, how the term shows up in Consilena. Definitions are general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is legal AI?

Software that uses AI models, usually large language models, for legal tasks such as research, contract review and drafting. Its output still needs checking by a person.

What is the difference between RAG and a plain chatbot?

A plain chatbot answers from what the model learned in training. Retrieval-augmented generation first finds relevant source text and gives it to the model, so the answer can cite it.

What does in-force law mean?

The version of a provision that has legal effect on a given date, as opposed to a repealed, amended or not yet commenced version.
