What In-force law means

Legislation changes over time. A provision may be in force, amended, repealed, or prospective (passed but not yet commenced), and the version that applies to a matter depends on the date that matters, such as when a contract was signed or a dismissal took effect.

Official publishers such as legislation.gov.uk show point-in-time versions and flag changes not yet applied to the text. Legal research should always say which version and date it relied on.

Citations show the status of the provision (in force, amended, repealed or prospective) and its date, and each answer shows the date its law is “as of”.
