What Statutory instrument means

Acts of Parliament often set out the framework and give ministers power to make detailed rules by statutory instrument (SI), such as regulations and orders. SIs also bring provisions of an Act into force (commencement orders) and amend other legislation.

SIs are published on legislation.gov.uk with a year and number, for example the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 (SI 2017/692).
