Jurisdiction
A territory with its own body of law, or the authority of a court to hear a particular case.
What Jurisdiction means
In everyday legal use, a jurisdiction is a territory with its own legal system: England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are separate jurisdictions within the UK, and each EU member state has its own national law alongside EU law.
The word also means a court’s authority to decide a dispute. Getting the jurisdiction right is the first step of any legal question, and a common source of error in AI answers.
