What Legal professional privilege means

In England and Wales, legal professional privilege covers legal advice privilege (confidential lawyer-client communications for legal advice) and litigation privilege (material prepared for the dominant purpose of litigation). Other jurisdictions have their own rules, and in Germany professional secrecy is also protected by criminal law.

Privilege depends on confidentiality, so lawyers should know where client material goes when they use a third-party tool, which providers process it and on what terms.
